For our whole school camp this year, we went cross-country skiing at the Snow Farm and spent two nights in the Musterers Hut.
Pūrākaunui School put on a Matariki hāngī for our community as part of the Dunedin City Council's Puaka Matariki Festival. We spent all day at school preparing the hāngī together and learning about the process. The tamariki then performed a special “Stolen Stars of Matariki” play, kapa haka,
and waiata, and Niccy Taylor gave a talk on local history. After we shared the kai, we set off special sky lanterns.
We went for a beautiful hike over the hills at Heyward point as a reward for filling our marble jar.
We spent another beautiful sunny autumn afternoon at Long Beach having fun in the waves with boogie boards, then headed back to school where the children persevered for 3 hours using flint to light a fire to roast marshmallows! We had a relaxed evening with our whānau with pizza, pasta, salad, fireside chats, guitar, and tents being put up on the field. Later we were all snuggled up watching a movie and looking forward to a big sleep! In the morning, after we'd had breakfast we returned to the coast for an intrepid low tide adventure to Secret Beach.
When we couldn't get down to our swimming lessons at Port Chalmers Pool due to a long term road closure, we took the opportunity to go swimming at Long Beach instead. We had a great day with Basil learning about beach safety, and some of us even learnt to surf!
We started off 2025 with a mihi whakatau to welcome Mikaela as our tumuaki. Mikaela has come to us from Waitati School, bringing 18 years of experience in education in various roles including team leader, Board of Trustees member, office manager, and mentor to student teachers. A true taonga to be cherished!
